Agli artisti e all’arte sono spesso affidate importanti finalità socio-culturali.

A process of manual writing to report, research and elaborate some sentences taken from interviews. Some people (artists, art world professionals and curators) were asked which aspects of an artist’s work would be effective in order to captivate their attention and make them follow that artist’s production and, on the other hand, which elements would cause them to lose interest. The interviewees were also asked to offer some advice to artists that wished to operate more effectively in their ambit. The attention to the selection of sentences is focused on the relativity of art, on the artist’s profession in today’s society and on the expectations that an artist has to live up to – often in contraposition with the possibility an artist has to properly exert his activity, the latter being his only source of income. If Nicolas Bourriaud detects in the relational factor – i.e. is the engagement of third parties – the common denominator of artistic practices, then Jean Baudrillard announces the “disappearance of art”, that ongoing process modifying art methodologies and the artwork itself, and lastly Regis Debray announces the time when the artist will be more important than his or her production. Artists and art are often entrusted with important social and cultural objectives. The artist is an increasingly undefined figure and art, questioning its own cultural role, becomes a starting point, an “incentive” an “input” that, by democratic action, does not require exclusive interpretations and becomes capable of generating symbioses. The selected phrases taken from the interviews describe the artist through personal opinion, they are therefore not presented as assertive descriptions but rather as “suggestions”, possibilities. As it commonly happens in the narration of a story, the definitions lead us to an intimate connection with other people’s experiences, involving us and disclosing to us a knowledge of the subject, that is not historical, that is arguable but not refutable. The quoted phrases describe the artist without revealing the subject of the discussion, and will remain anonymous.
